The United States walks a political tight rope in Bahrain. This is an excellent report from CFR that highlights some of the difficult matters surrounding U.S. policy with Bahrain.
One really interesting point that Mr. Logan brings up is that by suppressing more than half of its population, Bahrain is “squandering assets.” If equal rights are held by all in a country, this leads to greater productivity.
This report raises some interesting points about the diplomacy the United States will be engaging in with Bahrain in the upcoming months and years.
Hilary Clinton was vocal of the regime in March but the criticism of the regime waned over the summer. Since the beginning, the criticism of the Bahraini regime has been at a minimum compared to other countries in the Middle East.
